uran GhatiThe Shimla district in Himachal is not known for treks but, if one speaks to locals and checks out the geology of the place then, it is a very convenient place for small and medium treks. One such trek is the Buran Ghati pass – A medium difficulty trek which can be undertaken between May-June and Sept-Oct. It is a direct route from Pabbar valley (Shimla district) into Sangla valley (Kinnaur District) of Himachal Pradesh and involves crossing of a 4578m high Buran Ghati or Barua Pass. Dhanwari, near Rohru in Shimla district, is the convenient road head and can be approached from Shimla via Theog and Jubbal. Day 01: SHIMLA TO DHANWARI VIA ROHRU & JANGLIKH (2800m) – 210km (7hrs by car)

We drive from Shimla to Rohru via Theog and Jubbal. The drive is very scenic after Theog. Dhanwari is small village after Rohru. It has about 30 houses and small temple.

Day 02: JANGLIKH TO LITHUM THACH (3200m) 7h trek

A level walk initially through the fields and then through dense pine forests. Ascend gradually to Golku thach and then strenuously to Sambir Thach. Onwards the trail descends and ascends several times, fords a few streams, passes through several grazing grounds before arriving at Lithum Thach.

Day 03: LITHUM THACH TO DUNDA THACH (3400m) 5h trek

Day 05: DUNDA THACH TO BURAN GHATAI TO MALDI THACH (3500m) 8h trek

At first the path rises gently, then steeply to reach the junction of two trails. We take the one going north towards Buran Ghati. A panoramic view of the Kinner-Kailash peaks can be seen from the top of the pass. The trail then descends very steeply over a glacier, passes along Susrang lake, follows the Barua khad to arrive at Maldi Thach.

Day 06: MAKDI THACH TO KHARCHAM (1899m) 6h trek

Continue descending along the Barua gad, entering the wooded area then descend to Barua village in another 2 hours. Kharcham is short walk of 2hours from Sapni village.
